Ever tried PIENNOLO tomatoes? These are grown on the slopes of the volcano Vesuvius in its rich soil. Once picked they are hung in bunches for several months to mature where the skin thickens and the sweet flavour intensifies. Sold hanging up in their boxes they are used a few at a time in pasta sauces, on pizza or completely dried to make a preserve. They store for a long time. Piennolo now have the PDO (protected designation of origin) marque. Click the image above for more info.”

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM RUNGIS MARKET

“A tricky week with the country still reeling from the demonstrations. Obviously it’s a big week for festive ingredients. Chestnuts and excellent Perigord walnuts are available. Vacuum packed chestnuts are also a staple. For a bit of festive indulgence, Perigord black winter truffles are looking majestic. Give me a call for that day’s price. Truffles can be purchased individually. And for the bah humbugs out there who dream of sunshine there are French Gariguette strawberries at a very reasonable price! Also worth remembering is that we have access to all the markets in Rungis, so if your clients are asking for unusual ingredients from Valrhona chocolate to award winning French cheeses like Marcel Petite Comte and Vieux Berger Roquefort they are only a phone call away. ”

“Spanish artichokes have started but are expensive and we’re still waiting for the purple variety to start. Spanish heritage tomatoes are available. All root vegetables, Chinese artichokes, Jerusalem artichokes are available and prices are stable. Only chervil is short and price might go up. Cauliflower is available from Brittany and is beautiful.”
