VIOLET GARLIC New season dry French pink and violet garlic is a highlight this week.
WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM MILAN MARKET
Our buyer Tess says: “This week the heat has slightly abated a bit but been replaced with humidity. Further south big violent storms have been breaking out. We’ve seen the start of more delicious Italian grapes: the super sweet seedless pink Rosata is in now, along with Black Magic black grapes, and the favourite Uva Italia white grape. This week I’ve spotted the first new season Coscia pears just as Abate pears have finished, and also the first Sanguine drago plums (dragon plums) have started - delicious taste and vibrant colours with green skin and red flesh. Italian long watermelons are finally coming through a good size now. Other melons such as Honeymoon and the favourite Zerbinatti have also benefited from the heat bringing out the sweetness. Looking forward to seeing white peaches, white nectarines, and the first Strawberry grapes!”
Tess also recommends: red basil, borage, borlotti, courgettes of all kinds, Delica squashes, fennel, Tropea onions, trevise, apricots.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM RUNGIS MARKET
Our buyer Andy says: “It’s still stone fruit dominating the buyers’ walks out in Paris. French white and yellow peaches are now at their tip-top best. Vine peaches and nectarines are also available. The first of the Reine Claude greengages are in, a tad small and sour but a sign better fruit is to come. Stepping away from stone fruit, French figs are now available, slightly earlier than normal but a welcome addition. French Charentais melons are now absolutely stunning, albeit the price is still irritatingly high for the time of year. New season Charlotte potatoes are now available, including some lovely sand grown ones. New season dry French pink and violet garlic is around.”
Andy also recommends: cherries, air freight mango, courgettes, aubergines, Spanish asparagus, chervil root

OUR BESPOKE, WHOLE-PALLET ONLY WHOLESALE SERVICE
Our buyer Gaelle says: “ French and Spanish courgettes are still available and affordable although competing with English. Coloured cauliflower prices have dropped and volumes are rising. Heritage tomatoes are beautiful and very affordable. French carrots available and price is stable. French cauli is short and more expensive than English. New season banana shallots have started and price is still high but going down.
Broccoli price is still very expensive and cannot compete with English. The globe chokes will stay short for a while as there is not enough rain in Brittany. Only baby chokes are affordable. Spanish figs are very short and the few available are very fragile and expensive. The Spanish red chilies are not available currently. A few red Palermo are on the market. From Morocco, pumpkins are available. Red and green chilies volumes are short and price is going up. Seedless watermelon price is very low. Portuguese Muscade are also available on the market either loose or in boxes.”
