APRICOTS * PRODUCT OF THE WEEK
Gorgeous blush apricots from Italy and France - this are Rubino brand via our buyer Tess in Milan. Nectarines, peaches and cherries also on fine form.
WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM MILAN MARKET
Our buyer Tess says: “ As you fly into Milan you can see the Arborio rice fields prepared and flooded. Temperatures are rising and weather is dry. More stone fruits are in: first Italian leafy peaches - slightly small at the moment - plus Rubino ruby apricots. Watermelons and cherries also more abundant. Other new season items: first Borlotti beans, but very expensive at the moment; yellow fine Bobby beans; the sometimes elusive Pelandroni beans. From the family farm section more delicate item have come through: red basil, citronella (insect repellent or cocktail ingredient you choose!), lemon verbena, amaranto and elderflower. Little potted chilli plants are back in with their amazing little black chillies, and even first black truffles from Piedmont, although they carry a big price tag! Looking forward to seeing more delicious soft fruits, flat peaches, first plums, baby yellow watermelons, and Sorentino beef heart tomatoes.”
Tess also recommends: peas, broad beans, melons (smooth and rough skin), basil, courgettes (Trombetta, white, round, Romanesco), courgette flowers, aubergines, Cime di Rapa, fennel.

OUR BESPOKE, WHOLE-PALLET ONLY WHOLESALE SERVICE
Our buyer Gaelle says: “From Morocco, bad weather has increased prices, such as on yellow melon and Galia. The tomato season is definitely over and Dutch are extremely cheap. Watermelons and green chilies are also cheap. Red chilies are still extremely short and already end of season from some brands. Red pepper price is expected to drop. Moroccan pumpkins are available and very good value!
From Spain, chilies are very short - it’s almost impossible to get a full pallet. Courgettes are getting shorter! It’s still hard to get the long red peppers. Cherries are available and volumes shall increase shortly.
From France, courgette price is accessible and more volumes available with beautiful quality but the Spanish is still going. Banana shallot price now seems more stable but still low volumes. Root vegetables are starting to go up in price. Some lines are being replaced by Dutch such as root parsley and black radish. Baby artichokes are beautiful and very affordable. Artichokes are also daily at auction and very affordable for an early season. The heritage tomatoes price has dropped massively and quality is gorgeous.”
