Market Report - September

Fresh from Rungis

The market at Rungis is buzzing again after the August holidays. Nick our buyer says: "Just saw the first wet walnuts. Loads of nice plums here, including Mirabelle. The first quince have arrived, too." Further highlights include parsley root, chervil rootsamphire, squashes, gourds, Muscat grapes, cobnuts, Romanesco, and purple and yellow cauliflowers. Note that peaches, nectarines are winding down. "Melons will go on a a little bit longer - end of September they will all be finished," says Tim here in London.  

Fresh from Milan

Autumn is the time when Italian produce really dazzles for us. Of course, we have plenty of aubergines, tomatoes and courgettes. Tomatoes include Costoluto and San Marzano. Courgettes include pale and round. Leafy greens such as radicchio di Treviso, Castelfrancopuntarelle, chicory, and cime di rapa are starting now, too. Note that leafy peaches and nectarines are now winding down.

This month we're highlighting the incredible black garlic from Balsajo. This on-trend ingredient has a deep, sweet flavour much prized by chefs. It's terrific in marinades, dressings and sauces. Chef Yotam Ottolenghi, for example, recommends blitzing it with yoghurt to use when dressing roasted aubergines. See more in a Telegraph article here and recipe ideas from other tops chefs here.
