Fresh from Rungis:
Our buyer Nick says: "With our first snow fall in the Paris region, all French salads and spinach are now coming from Provence. Swiss chard has just changed to the south, too. We have a new watercress in sealed 125G punnets. Roots like the pink-tinged Jerusalem artichokes are plentiful and of good quality, coming from the Loire valley area. But as they're not stored like potatoes, they could become more scarce later in the season. Likewise with baby veg - still in plentiful supply, but could become tricky if temperatures drop too far."
"On the fruit side, we're now proud to be an official importer to the UK of Mouneyrac, a highly regarded mark in Rungis specialising solely in French apples and pears. Ask at our stand for more info. There are still French Tulameen raspberries available as well as some large blackberries, but the red and black currants are now finishing. Good quality sweet, leafy clementines are reasonably priced now as well as enormous Spanish oranges and Charentais melons from Senegal. We have air-freight, Kent variety mangoes and beautiful, if expensive, ruby red grapefruit from Florida. Very Christmassy (and delicious) giant Medjoul dates are available on or off the branch. There has been a price rise in our vacuum-packed chestnuts from Ponthier due to a catastrophic harvest in France and Spain."
Other lines include: oca, salsify, smoked garlic, dandelion, sand carrots, baby veg, Roscoff onions and more..
Fresh from Milan:
Our buyer Tess says: "We have seen the return of Sicilian produce now with San Mazzano, camone and marindas now coming up from there. The citrus is still strong with the first Tarocco oranges seen in the market. We are looking forward to monk's beard (agretti) arriving (it has made a very small appearance already), along with rose trevise, and strong blood oranges. Buona Natale tutte!!"
Other lines include: leafy lemons, bergamot, peppers, puntarelle, chicoria, fennel, fresh walnut pesto, aubergines, prickly pears, courgettes.
Our buyer Gaelle is available on +33 789 866 675. She says: "The cold weather and recent rain in Spain is making the winter veg a little slow. Available right now: globe chokes, broccoli, heritage tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, aubergines and iceberg... Spanish cauliflower have now started; more volumes are expected in the next couple of weeks. The colored cauli will start in Spain within two weeks, overtaking the French season. French winter cauli is now in full season. All the root veggies, shallots and banana shallots are still going for the winter. The red blood carrot is the new addition. From Morocco the tomatoes are in full season. Beef tomatoes were short but more are expected from next week. All the red chilies, red and white sweet peppers are now available and beautiful quality , as well as green beans and coco flat beans. Courgettes have been available and affordable so far. We will have to wait another month at least to see the first Moroccan peppers delivered. The sweet berkal clémentines will still be on for another month."
We also import a wide range of quality dried, tinned and dairy goods including cheese, yoghurt, oils, olives, spices, Boiron fruit purees and more. See here for extra info. It's chestnut season and we sell both fresh, Ponthier vacuum-packed and the puree in tins. La Perruche sugar is sheer class - available in both white and brown sugar cubes.
