WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM RUNGIS MARKET

“A quiet week in Rungis with everyone gearing up for the festive season. New season pears and apples have arrived, notably the delicious Louise Bonne from our old pals Serge & Jean-Louis at Mouneyrac. First Passe Crassane pears with the wax tip are also available. Some lovely apple varieties not available from UK growers are around, such as Jubilee, or Pommes de Noel (Christmas apple) as it’s known this side of the Channel, Chantecler - a lovely variety much adored by pastry chefs as it offers a lovely balance of sweetness and acidity, and holds it shape after cooking, plus the ever popular Golden Rose.”
— Andy, our French buyer (07810 504512 / andy@esc-foods.co.uk)

Andy also recommends: white winter asparagus, Panach berries, Label Rouge leafy clementines from Corsica to go with our Tout Miel ones from Spain, Rainier cherries from Chile (red also available), wild mushrooms (now from Eastern Europe and Sweden - Ceps, sliced and whole; Girolles; Chanterelles, yellow and grey), excellent tomatoes from Provence (varieties include Pineapple, Green Tiger and Marmande), quince, endive, pissenlit.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM MILAN MARKET

“The temperature is down. This has almost finished off the European porcini now and it’s still raining in the south of Italy. As a result, Sardinian spikey artichokes are sadly still expensive this week. The first blood oranges tarocco have started they have the taste but not the colour yet as they need the cold to turn.”
— Tess, our Italian buyer (07766 654732 / tess@eurosalad.co.uk)

Tess also recommends: bergamots, cedro, chillies, peas, squash, aubergines, cime di rapa, punterella, cicoria, radicchio, persimmon (a.k.a. Kaki fruit), peppers, courgette flowers, fennel, nespole, fresh olives.

ESC DIRECT - OUR BESPOKE, WHOLE-PALLET ONLY WHOLESALE SERVICE

“Another complicated week ahead with the ongoing yellow jackets strike in France. Moroccan and Spanish goods are arriving in small amounts as trucks get stuck daily. We are in full season for most vegetables. From Brittany the cauliflowers’ volumes have increased and prices are stable and affordable. Colored cauliflower is now out of season, but Savoy and Romanesco are available as well as leeks and all root vegetables.”
