WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM MILAN MARKET

Our buyer Tess says: “It’s been record temperatures and hit 44C. We’re starting to say goodbye to some of the tomatoes - Marindas being the first - and citrus is dwindling. Delicious Italian percocca peaches are about now and big green and black figs! Cannellini beans have also started, a firm favorite. This morning another little delicacy from the family farm; pineapple sage - it does smell of pineapples! And despite some tomatoes tailing off a few new ones have appeared: brightly coloured orange and yellow Romato, vine tomatoes, and a wonderful collection of tiny cherry tomatoes in amazing colours! Another favourite big sweet onion has come back too - cippola di Giarratana, delicious baked like the cippola Breme. Looking forward to new season pears, Coscia and Faccibeda (tiny and sweet), and Sanguine Drago plums - amazing green outside and red inside!”

Tess also recommends: broad leaf rocket, borlotti, courgettes of all kinds, fennel, Tropea onions, trevise, Abate and Decano pears, cedro, plums, Delica squashes.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM RUNGIS MARKET

Our buyer Andy says: “The famous sour cherries from Montmerency have started at long last. These lovely tart cherries are beloved of pastry chefs, but also used in main courses and starters with rich, fatty meats and fish. The hot weather in France means that strawberries are slightly difficult at the moment, best to buy daily as and when you need them. Also started are Vanillacots, lovely delicately flavoured apricots with a smooth skin like a nectarine.”

Andy also recommends: Coco de Paimpol, Prima grapes, white peaches, cherries, tomatoes, Ile de Re potatoes, Charentais melons.
