PRODUCER OF THE WEEK - SAVEUR DE CHAILLY TOMATOES

It’s a stonkingly good time for tomatoes. There’s so much choice in size, colours and flavours. Top of the tree - in my opinion - are Saveur de Chailly. We work directly with Benjamin and his team in Chailly en Bier. We believe these tomatoes are amongst the finest quality being sold in Rungis today. They have an incredible depth of flavour and look sensational. They use innovative and sustainable growing techniques - check their website for more info by clicking their name above.”

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM MILAN MARKET

Our buyer Tess says: “In Milan, heat has ramped up with a steady 30’ and sunshine but it’s still triggering a few storms. All the delicious stone fruits now available - white peaches, white nectarines and the white hybrid Merendell to come, delicious flat peaches, peaches and nectarines already in. The black bobby beans have started (for the goths among you!) also the bright yellow courgettes are now in. On the fruit side, the big long watermelons are here. Some of the citrus is starting to tail off now, with leafy Tarocco becoming sparse. We are looking forward to seeing fresh figs, the Vesuvio tomatoes, and yellow watermelons - summer is here!

Tess also recommends: Borlotti, courgettes of all kinds, fennel, Tropea onions, Abate pears, yellow and purple cauliflowers.

OUR BESPOKE, WHOLE-PALLET ONLY WHOLESALE SERVICE

Our buyer Gaelle says: FRANCE: courgettes - excellent quality but price on the rise due to heavy rain and lower volumes - expecting a shortage for a good ten days. From Brittany, artichokes are available - little purple or big globes, only baby chokes price is up. Leek price is still extremely high. Probably the last week for banana shallots; a new  variety shall start within 3 to 4 weeks. Heritage tomatoes are beautiful and available in volumes and price is stable. Carrots available but still pricey.

SPAIN: courgettes are now at the same price as French. Chilies are back - beautiful quality and price already low, a few Palermo now available. Galia melon quality has improved, but volumes are short on big sizes. Broccoli has become short and price very high.

MOROCCO: new season pumpkins have started. Red and green chilies are available - affordable and good quality. Watermelon volumes are now shorter and price is up.”
