WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM MILAN MARKET

[17:42, 2/13/2019] Tess ESC: Well this week you would have thought spring had sprung in Milan with daytime temperatures up to 15’ and nighttime just above freezing, and even better the weather is relatively quiet at the moment allowing produce to catch up with growing etc. This week saw the long awaited Yosemite clems finally come in, sweet and juicy once tasted never forgotten! Also the Candonga strawberries are about more and tasting delicious! The new season of Italian asparagus has also started, which is good to see. The tomato varieties now are as varied as the citrus and are equally delicious, amazing crunchy salty marindas and camone, big beautiful sauce
[17:55, 2/13/2019] Tess ESC: Sorry bloody phone! Big beautiful San Mazzano sauce tomatoes great for soups too! Delicious little datterinos full of that sunshine taste, amazing tasting little tiny red and yellow Tania cherry vine tiny and sweet, there’s definitely sunshine somewhere! Also this week saw the tiny carciofini artichokes start, pretty much used whole in cooking unlike the larger Roma. We said goodbye to the big red Sicilian pomegranates this week, but looking forward new season Riccio Fiorentino tomatoes should make and appearance and the fine asparagina, along with red asparagus, fingers crossed the weather plays ball!

Tess also recommends: agretti, radicchio, cauliflowers (purple, yellow), chillies, fennel, Frigatelli peppers, peppers, pomegranates, puntarelle, Tokyo turnips, Zucca.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM RUNGIS MARKET

It’s still frosty here in Paris but the warmer weather in the south has bought some lovely products into the market. Most exciting is the white asparagus, which is looking terrific and whilst still at the higher end price wise, will come down. And with Valentines around the corner a lovely treat for the better half - and probably still cheaper than a dozen roses. Excellent green asparagus from Spain also available, either loose in 2 kilo boxes, or the traditional bunches

Different tomatoes are appearing everyday including Rebellion, Marmande, and a lovely mixed box of cherry tomatoes from the chaps at Pomme D’Amour.

Beautiful Provence courgettes have just made their 2019 debut, including white, yellow and green. Spamish round, green and yellow also available.

Romanesco are still in fine fettle but coloured cauliflowers are having a tough time of it, best stick to the ones we have coming in from Italy if you need.

Calico Artichokes are really coming into their own now, prices have come down and all sizes available, we particularly like the 12’s. Really good baby artichokes also available and very reasonable.

On the fruit side French Kiwi’s are all over the market and looking (and eating) rather splendid. Green and gold available. Air Freight Passion Fruit from are in great nick. Better than their Kenyan cousins. New season Leafy Nadercotts are now eating really well, great for those who need a nice easy peeler.
— Andy, our French buyer (07810 504512 / andy@esc-foods.co.uk)

Andy also recommends: Portuguese Gariguette strawberries, Passe Crassane and Angelys pears, Charentais melons from Dominican Republic, nice Turkish quince, leafy Newhall oranges, Moscatel grapes.

ESC DIRECT - OUR BESPOKE, WHOLE-PALLET ONLY WHOLESALE SERVICE

🇫🇷 Some more heavy rain in France but very mild temperatures - so more volumes expected on leeks and cauliflower. Quality Romanesco from Brittany is short, very expensive - but beautiful !

🇪🇸 Heritage tomatoes are available and stable in price. No colored cauli nor bunched carrots. Strong demand on red peppers, prices are very high for now. The first pallet of Spanish palermo is arriving today after a good month without.

🇲🇦 Moroccan tomatoes are now full on quantity and good quality - prices keep going down due to low demand. No changes on red chilies - low prices and great quality. Green chili is already short and prices are going to be more expensive by next week. Courgette price has been dropping daily, but many offers on courgettes are already planned for next week on the French and European market, so we are expecting the situation could change very quickly!
