ITALIAN PLUMS

The Susine varieties at this time of year are at full sweetness! Susine Amole are sweet yellow plums. Susine Black Amber is another deep black sweet plum and the delicious Susine Sangue di Drago dragon plums are plentiful now.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM MILAN MARKET

Our buyer Tess says: “In Milan produce is amazing despite the heat and smelling sweet! Some tomato production has now moved to the northern Piedmont area as the heat increases in the south. This week has seen more grape and plum varieties starting. The grapes new in this week were Uva Rosata - really sweet pink seedless grapes, delicious! We also now have the very last of the citrus season the late Valencia’s are in. The soft fruit is amazing and right at its best now, and Italian big watermelons are in at the right size finally. Zerbinatti are in full swing with their whole melon range from the smooth and rough skins with their wax tips, tags and stamp on their skins all carefully packed in straw, to the huge watermelons! Looking forward to seeing the first Merendelle the hybrid white peach nectarine cross, and possibly new season prickly pears and strawberry grapes!!”

Tess also recommends: aubergines, basil, courgettes, courgette flowers, cucumbers, Delica squash, Frigatelli peppers, nectarines, Ma Pre apricots, wild fennel.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FROM RUNGIS MARKET

Our buyer Andy says: “The heat has been a major issue in France this past week, making some things like figs and fraises des bois virtually impossible. Hopefully with slightly cooler weather forecast things should get back to normality. We’re coming into a very quiet period in Rungis where a lot of growers and suppliers close fro the summer holiday period. Anything you need badly I would strongly recommend pre-ordering. Main product news is the new season of a couple of favourites. Muscat grapes have started up, available in 5 or 6kg boxes. These lovely dark purple grapes are one of the seasonal highlights. Also started is new season Lautrec garlic, only 70/90 calibre to begin with. New season Roscoff onions in 1kg nets have now started, price a little high but will go down as more become available. Reine Claude greengages are trickling into the market, and lots of good other plums as we come into the later summer fruits. Also worth a mention are some fabulous cell-packed Label Rouge Flat peaches.”

Andy also recommends: Belgian cherries, Provence tomatoes, figs, white peaches from Corsica, new crop Charlotte potatoes.

OUR BESPOKE, WHOLE-PALLET ONLY WHOLESALE SERVICE

Our buyer Gaelle says: “Shortage on coloured cauliflowers in Brittany due to heatwave last week, prices will stay strong next week. French cauli is short and still more expensive than the affordable English ones. From Normandy, Romanesco and savoy are now available . New season banana shallots have started, still short volumes on the first crops but will improve. Only baby chokes are affordable. New crop root veg shall start in volumes soon. Spanish new variety figs are now available mostly in small sizes and quality is good . The odd pallet of red palermo can appear on the market but it’s short and unexceptional quality and the Moroccan is out of season for now. The red Moroccan chilies are now new season and quite short but accessible due to a small demand. Seedless watermelons price is very low. The Portuguese muscade are also available on the market , as well à Portuguese plums. Sweet potatoes from Egypt are very expensive and hard to find on L1 and L2 size.”
